Staying mentally active during the golden years has long been believed to reduce one’s risk of memory loss. Now, studies are confirming it. Researchers studied 197 people aged 70-89 previously diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment or memory loss and compared them to 1,124 individuals without the symptoms. Results showed that those who carried out activities like reading, playing games, using the computer, pottery and quilting in their later years had a 30-50% lower risk of developing memory loss. In contrast, those who watched television for less than seven hours a day were likely to develop memory loss compared to those whose television viewing time exceeded seven hours in their later years.
