Why size matters

January 24th, 2010

It’s not just what you eat that counts on the road to losing weight,it’s about how much you eat too.How does your sense of portion control measure up?

What do you think a portion size of say, breakfast cereal or meat should be? I hope you’re sitting down because it will probably be a shock.I know it is to me every time i see the particular truth in black and white!

According to healthy eating guidelines,a serving of breakfast cereal should be one ounce and a serving of meat should be two to three ounces.Cereal belongs to the food group of which we can have 6-11 servings a day,but it could be very easy to eat and nuts, should be contributing 2-3 servings a day to our diet.Again,it’s astonishing how quickly that can add up.

Here’s a checklist of the sorts of foods we should be eating for healthybalance of nutrients. It gives a range for the number of daily serving (e.g. 6-11 servings). The upper end of range really intended only for a very active man;most of us,especially sedentary women, should took to the lower end. There are also a few handy little visual ideas of what that amount looks like.It helps to get good at estimating these by eye because you can’t carry around a set of scales everywhere you go.Well, you could, but it would look a little obsessive.

Spotlight on … Norah Jones

January 23rd, 2010

When Norah Jones became an international phenomenon with her debut album Come Away With Me in 2002,few raised an eyebrow or batted am eyelid. She is,after all,the progeny of the legendary Indian sitarist,Ravi Shankar.

Born Geethali Norah Jones Shankar in1979 in New York, she grew up with her American mother,Sue Jones,in Texas. She cultivated a love for “old music”,influenced more by her mother’s record collection than by her famous father’s music, with whom she had no contact since her parents’ separation when she was very young. As a child.she learned to play several instruments, focusing on the piano then she decided to study jazz piano at the university. But the big-city jazz scebe backoned,so after two years at university, she packed her bags and left for New york, her birthplace,to see if she could cut it as a full-fledged musician.

Working in a reataurant by day and performing in clubs at night.she not only performed with various jazz groups, but also put together a demo for her work, which she distributed around without success. But it eventually vaught the attention of top jazz label Blue Not,who wasted no time in signing her up.After her hit debut album,Norah released the county music-tinged Feels Like Home and the more stripped down Not Too Late. With her good looks, she also got dabble in acting, making her debut in My Blueberry Nights,co-starring Jude Law.But music always be her primary focus. For her latest album,The Fall, she builds on the foundation of her signature jazz sound with some contemporary rock.Rest assured,it’s not a complete revamp of her music;there’s plenty of that smouldering, intimate voice to love.

Changing a nappy

  • Make sure you have all necessary items at hand:a clean nappy, cotton balls or soft cotton cloths soaked in warm water for young babies or disposable wipes for older ones,nappy-rash ointment if necessary, and clean clothes if the previous outfit is soiled.
  • Ensure your hands are clean and have some wipes or a damp cloth at hand in case your hands get dirty halfway through, you should never leave your baby unattended on a tabletop to wash your hands.
  • place the baby on the clean surface. If you are out of the house, carry a large clean cloth or towel with you to lay on a tabletop or surface.Open up the nappy,at the front of your sides, hold the baby’s anckles with one hand, and carefuly lift him so that his lips are slightly raised and you can remove the nappy from under him.Fold the soiled part in and put aside for now.
  • Put the baby down again and clean his front with a moist cotton ball or cloth, remembering to wipe gentlly in the creases. You can also use baby wipes – damp,cloth-like tissues that you can just use and throw.Choose alcohol-free wipes, which won’t irritate the baby’s skin.
  • Lift him gently again by the anckles and use a fresh cotton ball or wipe to clean his buttocks. Also wipe the lower back and thigh.
  • Dry the baby’s front ,buttocks and creases to prevent nappy rush.Add nappy-rash cream if necessary.
  • Slide a clean nappy under him, pull up the centre between his legs and attach Velcro tabs at the side.Ensure the nappy fits.

Alert : Ensure the nappy fits snugly around the waist and is high enough at the back so it doesn’t leak.
