December 3rd, 2009

When you eat healthy breakfast, you’re most likely to:

  • Take in more vitamins and minerals, and less fat and cholesterol
  • Have better concentration and productivity throughout the morning
  • Manage your weight better
  • Regulate your metabolism
  • Have lower cholesterol, which helps reduce your risk of heart disease

Whole-grain breads and bran muffins, or cold low-fat whole grain cereals mixed with fresh fruit such as bananas or strawberries are always good choices.

Fresh fruits and vegetables.Gulp down a glass of fresh fruit or vegetables juice, or have a 100 percent juice beverage without added sugar. Alternatively make smoothie. Blend fruits, ice cubes and yogurt, and drink it in the car.

Overcooked again? Most microwave recipes give you a range of cooking times; choose the shorter duration then check for doneness to avoid overcooking.
Veggie cooking 101. Plastic wrap is the best for covering veggie because it wraps tightly, holding in heat and steam. Pol Martin, author of Supreme Cuisine suggests puncturing the wrap to allow steam to escape, preventing it from splitting. Fresh greens cook quickly with minimum water, so they retain their nutrients, taste, colour and texture.
Cooking speed varies. Dense foods cook more slowly than porous ones. E.g., mashed potatoes cook much faster than baked potatoes and ground beef quicker than steak, says Ann Creber, recipe author for World’s Finest Foods.
Containers. Shallow round and oval shapes allow the most even cooking. Square and rectangular ones may cause food to overcook in the corners because more energy is absorbed there

4 ways to make a friendship last

December 3rd, 2009

1. Self-disclosure: Keep your friends up to date with what’s going on in your life. That includes feelings, too.
2. Supportiveness: Be a good listener. Also, offer your support and advice when it’s needed.
3. Interaction: Make time for each other. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you do it together.
4. Positivity: The self-disclosure point doesn’t give you a licence to whinge non-stop. Good friendships are based on positive intimacy.
